Questions About Learning Biblical Hebrew

Do I need any prior Hebrew experience?

Not at all. The course begins with the alphabet, and the lessons and practice sheets are paced so the language builds gradually.

Biblical Hebrew or Modern Hebrew: which one is this?

This course focuses on Biblical Hebrew, the language of Scripture and prayer. Modern Hebrew is closely related, a little like the English of Shakespeare compared with the English we speak today.

How is this different from other Hebrew courses?

Lessons are short and practical. Instead of thick grammar books, each one comes with a single-page Practice Sheet and simple memory aids that help the letters stick.

Who is Bruce Greenstein?

A retired Miami dentist who has studied Biblical Hebrew for decades. He spent his career helping patients understand complicated things, and he brings the same patience to teaching Hebrew.

Why study Biblical Hebrew if I’m not a scholar?

Every translation is a set of choices someone else made for you. Even a little Biblical Hebrew lets you see the word underneath the English: for example, that the “helper” of Genesis 2:18 is described with k’negdo, “opposite him.” Dr. Bruce Greenstein teaches non-scholars to spot those moments themselves, without seminary training.

Is the course for Christians or for Jews?

Both. Hebrew By The Book welcomes readers of every faith background: Christians who love the Psalms, Jews reconnecting with prayer and text, and anyone curious about the language of Scripture. Readings are grounded in Jewish sources and are never reshaped to fit one tradition’s theology.
