About
Meet Dr. Bruce Greenstein
A retired Miami dentist and a lifelong student of Biblical Hebrew, helping everyday readers of every faith find their way into the original words.
His story
From dentistry to Hebrew
The Toothsleuth
Bruce practiced dentistry in South Florida from 1988 to 2023, after training at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. Patients knew him as the “Toothsleuth” for the way he tracked down the real cause of a problem, then explained it in plain English.
A lifelong student
For decades he studied Biblical Hebrew on his own, not as a scholar but as a committed student. He reads all 150 psalms every month, and once prayed the Rosh Hashanah service alone on a North Carolina mountaintop when there was no congregation nearby.
The Saturday class
Most Saturdays Bruce teaches Hebrew prayer and Psalms at his Chabad in Cutler Bay and Homestead, Florida, in English and Spanish. Hebrew By The Book grew out of that class.
For every faith
His students come from many backgrounds. Bruce welcomes anyone who is curious, whatever their faith or starting point.
Israel, 2018
In 2018 Bruce traveled through Israel with his friend Joe, from the stalls of the shuk to Abraham’s Well in Beersheva. The land is also a turning point in Bruce’s book on the Hebrew of Scripture, where prayer opens into Israel. One day he hopes to bring Hebrew By The Book on trips to the holy sites.
